Music journalism is in crisis, with local arts coverage dwindling to the point of near collapse. After 20+ years in the field, journalist Chris Schulz has found himself reluctantly speaking out about the decline of his once-thriving industry. “It’s a shame our music journalism industry has collapsed”, says Schulz in his introduction to a new report. “I kind of have to catch myself because I find it a little depressing.”
The Creative NZ-commissioned report, New Mirrors, confirms his fears while proposing solutions and ignites an essential conversation about revitalizing arts coverage and the value of journalism in fostering cultural narratives.
